That's again a common mistake ! When people see a offroader they conclude by saying "Look, a Range Rover". If it is a Jeep, the driver will be pride oneself (even if saying the contrary). But the guy who is driving a authentical Land Rover, he would be really angry.

What ? Agree with you, the Land Rover driver should be proud to be said having a luxury Range Rover. Yes, but... driving a Land Rover, Defender shape, it is calvary, a religion. The car is so unconfortable that we are pleased to be recognised as such and people being aware of our self-suffering. That's why please do not mix a Land Rover with a Range Rover: a bit of recognition...

The other reason is synonym for "purist" of brand's decline. Not that the Range Rover is a bad car, sure not. But it is the first time that Land Rover changes its market view and go on the luxury market, designed for the gentleman farmer who will never use its car off the road, in despite of its huge abilities and capacities. The frame is an evolution of the scale frame from the very first generation of Land Rover and gives to it an amazing capability off road, coil springs added.

Range Rover Classic de pré production, 1970.

As a conclusion, the Range above is called Classic nowadays to distinguish it from its next generations. Just below is the two next generations, with still amazing capabilities off road but always higher luxury standards and higher prices... Some said that Land Rover drivers manage to go through paths in which the Defender could not go. That's hard to believe and is badly hurting pre-judgments.

For those interested in Range Rover, go and visit specilised websites like the the Range Rover Register, an UK based monster website that can find the second name of the grandmother of the worker who built your Range Rover in the late seventies ! Yes, it seems that some people are interested in knowing such stuffs...

Conclusion: swear that you will never again call a Land Rover a Range Rover.

Land Rover is a brand. Range Rover is a model of that brand.
