The terminology Commando exists just in France, a country into which this military version was never sold. Its real name is Lightweight. It is a light version of a normal civilian Land Rover SII or SIII. This vehicle was ordered by British Army in order to be carried by helicopter at this time.
The 88" standard Land Rover was too heavy and to wide to be lifted and to fit into army helicopter, which were Westland Wessex, only able to carry a load of 1 117kg.
The Lightweight had lightened specific designed body panels and those could be easily dismanteled: rear tailgate, doors, front windscreen and others could be quickly sorted in order to make the car fit into helicopter and lifted to the front line.
This vehicle, as a consequence, has never been sold on the civil market. The first Lighweight had the front lights in the center, like the SII, and were based on the reinforced version of Series 88" frame.
The Lightweight has been sold to many European armies and can be imported as such easily in France. Its price is a bit higher than other versions.
